Ladies and Gentlemen

It is our pleasure and honor to welcome you The Honourable Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command and all the dignitaries here present to the official commissioning and upgrade of our newly built Police Station.
Ekpon is a border town in Igueben Local Government Area with a projected population of approximately 10,000 bounded by three Local Governments -Esan South East, (EAST) Ika South,(Delta State) SOUTH and Orhiomhon (to the west) and have hinter and developed roads with these aforementioned local governments.

The need to build a modern police station in Ekpon was the quest to beef up security structure in Ekpon and its environs is dated back to several years ago when the hitherto peaceful and serene environment and culture of our people became threatened by crimes and criminality.

It all started when herdsmen began to attack our farmers both in their farms and around the town. Women were being molested, threatened and raped. Men and their children were shot at and driven out of their farms. At home our people were being robbed, maimed by armed bandits including kidnappers. Local village vigilante were put in place but could not cope. The activities of these criminals still persist up till now on daily basis. The most recent (48hrs ago) is a robbery incident at a nearby Hotel where 12 units of LG plasma television sets were taken away over night. These heinous and barbaric acts are carried out with impunity because the criminals take advantage of lack of capacity of the present security organs on ground. It is worth mentioning the ugly incident that occurred precisely 26th March 2009, when armed robbers ambushed a convoy of Delta State Commissioner of Police here and gunned down not less than eight Police Officers in his entourage on their way to Abuja.

Consequently, our youths are migrating to urban areas. Our sons and daughters in the cities are afraid to visit home and as such could not come to invest in small and medium scale industries and build portable mansions for retirement, there by reducing the level of development of the town.

We as a community took a stand that these criminal activities cannot continue unabated as such ,agreed to pull our synergy with the police to put an end to the criminality.

We then resolved to pull our resources together to erect this state of art Police Building with following features:-
-Charge Room with Counter
-6 Office Rooms (2 out of which with attached toilet)
-Office furnitures
-Ceiling Fans in all the offices including Charge room
-7 toilets with water closet
-Court yard
-Male Cell with attached toilet
-Female Celle with attached toilet
-Water supply from underground /overhead storage tanks with a pumping machine.
-Spacious lobby
-Large Premises with good parking space.
We made provision for the following logistics – a Toyota Hilux Patrol Van, a Motor cycle, a 6.5KVA generator, accommodation for DPO for the take off.

It is our hope that this facilities will act as impetus for the Police to up
their game in fighting crime in this area.

The Project we are about commissioning today was funded entirely through community contributions of our sons and daughters within Nigeria and in diaspora at a cost of Thirty Million Naira (#30,000,000). There was no assistance from the Local Government or any Government Agency.

Honourable Commissioner Sir, my people toiled day and night, most of then poor farmers to fund this project.

The interest shown by many of our people during the building stage was wonderful and the enthusiasm with which the funding for the commissioning was provided was beyond expectation.

It is our wish that these facilities will be put to judicious use and always well maintained for the over all security of our people and not to intimidate and create fear to our people.

Honourable Commissioner Sir, permit us to present to you an important prayer for you to use your good offices to upgrade this Police Station to Divisional Police Station with all requirements and empowerment of a Division having been informed of the precarious state of the geographical location of Ekpon . In line with this prayer, we request that you post here Armed Officers for the effective policing of our community and its environs.

There is need to draw the attention of the Police and every other security agents that Ekpon are predominately farmers and some of the farmers are also hunters and we believe with very sincerely that so many of them belong to organized hunters association.
It is not out place to suggest that we should constitute the Ekpon Police Public Relation Committee
It is our plea that the police should liaise with these body and the vigilante group in town in working out effective security management.

Before I yield the floor, I will say thank You to God, the Almighty, the Commissioner of Police Edo State and all other dignitaries for making today a reality. I would like to express my gratitude to His Royal Highness –the Onojie of Ekpon for the Fatherly role, Members of Ekpon Development Union , Members of the Building Committee for their commitment, the sons and daughters of Ekpon within the country and in diaspora for the moral and financial support.

Finally, we assure you of our continued co-operation and assistance where necessary and hope that this renewed relationship will bring security, peace and development to everyone.

Thank you for the understanding

For and on behalf of Ekpon Community:

Celestine Chuks Edobor
Chairman, Building and Handover Committee
